CELEBRITY EXPERIENCE
If your next production includes celebrities, political figures, or high-level executives, then you know the added pressure this creates on your project. Things need to run smoothly and professionally, and production needs to be perfect. Shaun understands the unique circumstances and protocols for set etiquette in these situations. He has personally directed and recorded the following celebrities on-camera:
Melissa Etheridge Singer, songwriter, musician, and guitarist, Etheridge was nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and is a 2-time winner. She also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “I Need to Wake Up” from the film An Inconvenient Truth. In 2011, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Shaun recalls, “Melissa was a beautiful soul to work with. I sat on the floor 5’ in front of her with a small group of kids as she sang “Come To My Window”… just her and her guitar. She donated musical instruments to the school. She was very kind and generous.”
Nickelback One of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands, having sold more that 50 million albums worldwide. In 2009, Billboard ranked Nickelback the most successful rock group of that decade.
Shaun recalls, “Nickelback was a lot of fun to be around. As we sat in their green room together, Chad introduced himself and the band and invited me to join in with their families before they went on stage. They were incredible cordial and welcoming.”
Bob Costas Sportscaster who is known for his long tenure with NBC Sports. During that time, he received 28 Emmy Awards for his work and was the prime-time host of 12 Olympic Games.
Shaun recalls, “Bob is such a professional. We had very specific protocols on set for the camera positions and lighting. When Bob came in, he was complimentary of the setup and wanted to meet the crew. He was easy to work with, top-notch, and very professional.”
Tom Brady Initially selected 199th in the sixth round of the NFL draft, Brady’s stellar career as an NFL quarterback has earned him wide recognition as the greatest quarterback of all time. He holds nearly every major quarterback record, including being the only Super Bowl MVP for two different franchises. He is also the only quarterback to win a Super Bowl in three separate decades.
Shaun recalls, “Working with Brady was an absolute dream come true. He had swagger and confidence that was unshakeable. His smile was infectious. He made me feel like we had been friends for a while. His leadership was obvious. It was that day that I became a Tom Brady fan… and followed his football career ever since, cheering for him to win every game except the ones agains the Chiefs.”
Dave and Jenny Marrs Stars of HGTV’s “Fixer to Fabulous”, Dave and Jenny embrace small-town America by renovating classic homes in and around their hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. This resourceful and creative couple transform historic houses in desperate need of an update and turn them into charming forever homes.
Shaun recalls, “Getting to work with this couple first-hand was refreshing. In the world of reality TV, you never know what’s real or fake… but this couple was authentic. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them personally.”
Dr. Oz Television presenter, physician, and author, Dr. Oz appeared as a health expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show for five seasons. He later hosted his own show, The Dr. Oz Show, for over a decade.
Shaun recalls, “My experience with Dr. Oz was fairly brief on set, but the one thing that stood out was that he was genuinely interested in helping the people in the community. He was being pulled in a lot of directions for TV purposes, but he wanted to make sure the people he was there to help were taken care of.”
Tech N9ne Rap artist known for his dynamic rhyme schemes and speed rap abilities. Tech N9ne is co-founder of the record label “Strange Music” and has sold over two million albums. His music has been featured in film, television, and video games.
Shaun recalls, “This was a unique experience to be able to work with a local rap artist who has certainly made a name for himself. Learning about his background and childhood that took place in the same city I live in, yet, it was such a different experience from my own. There was a lot of contrast there even though we live so close together.”
Bo Jackson He is the only professional athlete in history to be named an All-Star in both baseball and football. His elite achievements in multiple sports have given him the reputation as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
Shaun recalls, “Unfortunately, I did not get to work with Bo in his prime. He had long since been retired but he was still very active in promoting sports in his community of Chicago. It was obvious that sports had taken their toll on this once incredible athlete. I became aware of how much athlete’s give of themselves, and how little their body has left after the sports are over.”
Jane’s Addiction They are one of the first bands from the early 1990’s alternative rock movement to gain both mainstream media attention and commercial success in the U.S. Jane’s Addiction became icons of the “Alternative Nation” and are credited with launching the first Lollapalooza festival.
Shaun recalls, “Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell are legit rock-n-roll artists that are in a league of their own… a league they created. I have to admit, I was a bit star struck on this one because these guys are such icons. Perry has a sense of wit about him. He had the crew laughing pretty good at one point. This was a cool shoot for sure.”
John Cena Professional wrestler, actor, and former rapper, John Cena is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. He is tied with Ric Flair for the most recognized world championship reigns in professional wresting history.
Shaun recalls, “The dude’s arms are MASSIVE. I’ve never seen arms so big. I have no idea how arms can be that big. The guy was built like a tank that I wouldn’t want to have anything to do with!”
Bonnie Franklin Best known for her role as Ann Romano on the television series “One Day at a Time”. She was nominated for Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe Awards.
Shaun recalls, “Having grown up watching Bonnie and then getting to work with her was a real treat. She was so gentle and kind. I wanted to hug her but that’s totally against set etiquette. So, I just had to enjoy the moments I had directing her. She was such a pro and was so pleasant to work with.”
Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert Contestants Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert appeared on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” respectively. They were both eliminated from their shows but they were later invited back to appear on “Bachelor in Paradise” where they fell in love and were married on the beach.
Shaun recalls, “I’ve been able to work with Jade and Tanner multiple times and they really are in love! They’re actually an amazing couple and have always been a joy to work with. I honestly didn’t think their relationship was going to be real, but it was. They taught me that you can find true love, even on reality TV!”
Buck O’Neil Was a first baseman and manager in the Negro American League. After his playing days, he worked as a scout and became the first African American coach in MLB. In his later years, he became a popular and renowned speaker, helping to renew widespread interest in the Negro leagues.
Shaun recalls, “The stories of the past and what the players and coaches of the Negro League went through… just to be able to play baseball. Buck O’Neil was one of those legends. To meet and work with him was surreal. I’m so proud that Kansas City is the home to the Negro League Baseball Museum. It’s one of the gems of Kansas City and Buck O’Neil was instrumental in passing along the history of how baseball and our country has evolved.”
Bruce Weitz Best known for his role as Sgt. Michael “Mick” Belker in the TV series “Hill Street Blues”. Winner of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Shaun recalls, “Bruce has quite a bio and it showed through his coolness on set. I loved directing him. He added so much with the subtle expressions and voice inflections… making the words in the script come to life.”
Priest Holmes NFL running back who played 11 seasons in the league. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens in their victory over the New York Giants. During his tenure with the Chiefs, he was a 3-time All-Pro, 3-time Pro Bowl, and was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2002.
Shaun recalls, “I don’t have enough good things to say about Priest Holmes. I worked with Priest so many times that we were on a first name basis. It felt like working with a friend on set. He’d even call me out in a crowd just to say hello. He’s the kind of person who makes everyone feel important and special. This is what I appreciate most about Priest Holmes.”
Josh Turner Turner is a country and gospel singer and songwriter with several number one hits including “Your Man” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance”. In 2012, his song titled “Time is Love” was the biggest country hit of the year.
Shaun recalls, “I shot Josh back stage and then had the privilege of shooting him on stage while he sang a couple songs. He’s known for his voice and, I can tell you, I stood there in 100% pure amazement. What a gift! I’ve never forgotten this one.”
Frank White Former second baseman with the Kansas City Royals. He was a 5-time All-Star, won 8 Gold Glove Awards, and won the American League MVP.
Shaun recalls, “I grew up a fan of Frank White. He was my favorite player in the MLB, so I was thrilled to get to work with him on a commercial spot. I couldn’t help but let him know how much I enjoyed watching him play AND win the World Series with the Royals. He got a kick out of that.”
Tony Gonzalez NFL tight end who played 17 seasons in the league. He’s regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time, holding the record for the most receiving yards and receptions by a tight end. He had 14 Pro Bowl selections and 6 first-team All-Pros as a player. He has since served as a football analyst for NFL on Prime Video, as well as CBS Sports and FOX Sports.
Shaun recalls, “Tony is a monster. I have no idea how anyone could tackle someone as big as he is. He’s a beast. I did multiple interviews with him and I never felt like the chair was big enough for him to sit in. I love Tony!”
Chris Berman A 6-time honoree of the National Sports Media Association’s National Sportscaster of the Year award, Berman was instrumental in establishing ESPN’s lasting popularity during the network’s formative years. He is well known for his various catchphrases and quirky demeanor. He has anchored SportsCenter, Sunday NFL Countdown, NFL Primetime, and others.
Shaun recalls, “Chris is hilarious! He was hard to direct simply because I couldn’t stop laughing. He’s constantly making comments and jokes and keeping people smiling… but he’s also serious about what he does and I felt challenged to get everything right the first time because he’s such a professional. I always knew he was going to nail HIS part, so I wanted to nail mine.”
Trent Green NFL quarterback who played 15 seasons in the league. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Rams in their victory over the Tennessee Titans. During his tenure with the Chiefs, he was selected to 2 Pro Bowls. Since his football career, Trent has worked in the NFL as a color analyst on radio and television.
Shaun recalls, “Trent is an all around great guy with a warm personality. He was always friendly with the crew, making everyone feel welcome and relaxed. I appreciated the care that he always showed for everyone on set.”
Chris Matthews Political commentator, talk show host, and author, Matthews hosted his own weeknight hour-long talk show titled, “Hardball with Chris Matthews”.
Shaun recalls, “The name of his show says it all, and Chris was no different on set. He kept everyone -and I do mean everyone - on their toes at all times!”
